Prospects of Multiband Systems and Hollow Core Fiber for High-Capacity Transport Networks

Nokia, Portugal
Abstract
High-capacity optical fiber transmission systems using a single transmission band are approaching the fundamental Shannon limit due to increasing demand.
To address this capacity crunch, different approaches are being investigated, including multi-band transmission (MBT), which unlocks additional capacity in existing single-mode fiber (SMF) infrastructure and postpones the need for costly new fiber deployments, and rolling out new fiber types, such as hollow-core fibers (HCF).
This paper overviews key findings obtained from comprehensive system- and network-level simulations that shed light on the prospects of exploiting MBT systems over both legacy SMF and forward-looking HCF.
