Innovative Sensing Technologies for Secure and Optimized Optical Networks

Nokia Bell Labs, France
Abstract
The increasing reliance on optical network infrastructures for critical services, such as communication, navigation, information access, and medicine, has made their resilience more essential than ever. This growing dependence is compounded by external challenges, including the effects of global warming, which lead to more frequent natural disasters, and a complex geopolitical landscape with heightened risks of intrusion or disruption. As a result, continuous monitoring is crucial for identifying network failures and constructing digital twins for the marginless operation of the optical network to ensure its stability and security.
In this context, the commercial availability of software tools, such as Nokia’s Wavesuite Health & Analytics, enables large-scale collection of diverse data streams from numerous sensors embedded in the optical network. This wealth of data unlocks opportunities for developing optimization workflows, detecting and localizing soft and hard failures, and preventing major transmission disruptions.
This talk will present innovative solutions that harness data streams to enhance network operations, including fiber movement detection, system parameter identification, and the quantification of propagation impairments like nonlinearity noise. These applications highlight the potential of network sensing for secure and optimized optical infrastructures.
