A Multi-Functional Robotic Automation Platform for Multi-Vendor Optical Transport Network: Accelerating Troubleshooting, Validation, and Proof of Concept Efforts

Prof. Andrea Fumagalli
UT Dallas, Dallas, USA

Abstract

Network automation is essential for accelerating service deployment and optimizing operations, especially in the challenging world of multi-vendor optical transport networks.

Interoperability challenges arising from vendor-specific implementations must be overcome through standardized frameworks such as those defined by OpenROADM MSA and other organizations.

This presentation reviews the latest architectural solution devised by our team to achieve a fully automated, vendor-agnostic solution that integrates system-level automation with robotic process automation to streamline OpenROADM-compliant network operations.

Our solution automates compliance validation, end-to-end service provisioning, troubleshooting, and multi-vendor simulation, achieving accurate and repetitive device configuration, real-time monitoring, and timely fault resolution.

Additionally, it automates report generation to facilitate structured analysis and reduce manual effort.

About the Speaker

Andrea Fumagalli is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Texas at Dallas and the Founding Director of the Open Networking Advanced Research (OpNeAR) Lab and the OpenLab @ UT Dallas (https://labs.utdallas.edu/openlab/). OpenLab is a neutral host facility for data networking equipment validation, focusing on multi-vendor interoperability of open and disaggregated commercial network elements for industry implementation agreements, such as OpenROADM MSA, O-RAN Alliance, Open ZR+ MSA, etc. OpenLab @ UT Dallas also trains the next generation of telecom engineers to be familiar with and successful in an open and disaggregated networking environment. Since 2016, Dr. Fumagalli has been serving as Faculty Advisor to the broader IEEE Student Branch Chapter, a vital student professional organization of the ECE department at UT Dallas.
