Strategies for Implementing ZR Technology in Meta's Backbone Network
Chair: Achim Autenrieth

Meta, USA
Abstract
Meta operates one of the largest global optical backbone network to support its business across social media, AI training, virtual/augmented reality, etc.
The rapid traffic growth on the network leads to significant network design challenges in how to support this growth with limited space/power/cost budget.
To address these challenges, we proposed a set of strategies to evolve our backbone network towards a point-to-point architecture, also implementing ZR optics to achieve high efficiency gains in fiber and site investments.
About the Speaker
Debottym Mukherjee has led global teams within Meta’s Network Planning group for over a decade, creating sustainable impact across Backbone & DC Networks, and Engineering teams. His work has shaped global caching systems, peering frameworks, and high-performance backbone architectures that underpin seamless connectivity for billions of users.
His deep experience has spanned spearheading technology integrations during mergers and acquisitions at leading North American telecom providers, unifying fragmented IP, VoIP, and MPLS networks into scalable, resilient infrastructures. His strategic oversight ensured smooth transitions for back end infrastructure consolidations, balancing innovation with operational stability.
As he champions scalability and reliability within Meta, you will find him advancing network architectures and the transformative role of AI in Backbone & Data Center traffic patterns across the industry. He continually contributes to industry publications, leading global speaking engagements, and creating opportunities within the AI landscape.
